CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION) — In light of the Trump administration’s sweeping new trade policies, local women are reacting to new studies that reveal more about what are being called “Pink tariffs.”
They find that on average, women pay an extra dollar per garment compared to men, costing them more than two billion dollars per year.
The policy has taken shape over a decade as clothing and footwear are classified by gender in the U.S. Tariff schedule.
Yet, with Trump imposing 10 percent tariffs on most trading partners, women worry their costs may rise.
“I’m very upset with what’s going on. The tariffs are scary. The economy is going down the tubes, and I all it just keeps echoing my head.”
According to the Progressive Policy Institute, average tariff rates on women’s clothing were nearly 17 percent in 2022, which is nearly three percent higher than the rate for men’s clothing.
