Izzy Finch, 23, was enjoying a few drinks with her cousin when she ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio with an unexpected price tag
A 23-year-old woman was left gobsmacked after she was mistakenly charged a staggering £1,600 for a bottle of wine at her local pub.
The pricey mishap took place when William Finch, 22, and his cousin Izzy Finch, a support worker, were out for a drink. Izzy expected to pay around the usual £16 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie but was shocked to see her bank account debited by £1,653.52 instead.
Izzy, from Hull, East Yorkshire, quickly spotted the error. She showed both the receipt and her bank statement to the pub staff, who promptly arranged a refund.
Izzy said: “I was in complete shock and I just stared at Amira the barmaid and said there is no way I’ve just paid £1653.52 is there.
“And with that the receipt came out saying it’s gone through.”
William, a civil servant also from Hull, suspects that the enormous charge occurred when an employee accidentally entered £16.53 along with £16.52, which was the actual price of the wine.
William said he was shocked at first but soon saw the funny side: “At first, I was just in shock.
“But once I saw the bartender’s face and Izzy’s reaction, I couldn’t stop laughing. I was in absolute hysterics. We were all a bit drunk and getting bottles of wine in rounds.”
Emphasising the laid-back approach to modern payment methods, he noted, “Izzy just tapped her Apple Pay as usual and didn’t notice at first.

“She’s one of those people who views tapping as ‘free money’.”
But the comical incident was not without worry: “She was panicking and saying she’d go into her overdraft,” he added.
The bar staff immediately sprang to action, with the bartender expressing profound apologies while ensuring the mishap was swiftly dealt with.
“The refund’s still processing, but it should go through.”
