Why Apple’s iPhone Production is Unlikely to Move to the U.S. – News and Statistics

Indonesia Nears Deal with Apple to Lift iPhone 16 Ban - News and Statistics

Apr 10, 2025

The Trump administration’s strategy to pressure Apple into relocating iPhone production to the United States faces skepticism, as experts suggest the move remains improbable despite high tariffs. According to a report by Yahoo Finance, the tariffs on Chinese products have reached 145%, yet Apple’s entrenched supply chain and cost implications make a domestic shift unlikely.

Apple’s complex supply chain, established in China since the 1990s, presents significant hurdles. Transitioning production to the U.S. would require years and billions of dollars, potentially tripling the cost of an iPhone to over $3,000, as per Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. With the current price of an iPhone around $1,000, such an increase could severely impact sales.

Despite the tariffs, Apple’s profit margins remain buoyed by its services division, which generated $96 billion in revenue last fiscal year, unaffected by the tariffs. This financial cushion allows Apple some leeway to maintain current pricing without immediate impact, as noted by Forrester Research analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee.

While Apple has committed to a $500 billion investment and job creation in the U.S., these efforts do not include iPhone manufacturing. Instead, the focus is on expanding technologies like artificial intelligence, with plans for a Houston data center.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has predicted a manufacturing shift due to the tariffs, but Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has previously expressed doubts about the U.S. labor market’s capacity to support such production.

Apple’s strategic responses, including some production in India and Vietnam, highlight its adaptive approach amidst ongoing trade tensions.
