The next local elections are taking place in May 2025
The next local election is taking place on Thursday, May 1, as millions of people across the UK set out to vote for 1,631 council seats, 23 county, unitary and metropolitan councils, and six directly elected mayors.
Heading to the polls in May, voters will be choosing representatives for local government, parish councillors, local authority mayors, combined authority mayors and combined county authority mayors.
These are set to be the first local elections since Labour were voted in in the 2024 General Election – but when was the last local election?
The most recent UK local elections were held back on May 2, 2024, which covered covered 107 councils in England, 11 directly elected mayors, and 37 police and crime commissioners in England and Wales.
As well as that, the Blackpool South parliamentary by-election took place on the same day, and in Lambeth, London, voters participated in the London Assembly elections, which occur every four years in which constituents vote for the 25 members of the London Assembly.
The 2024 local elections marked a significant shift in the UK’s political landscape as the Conservatives suffered large losses while Labour gained a lot of seats.
In total Labour gained 232 council seats, bringing their total to 1,158, and took control of 8 additional councils, totalling 51 under their leadership. On the other hand, the Conservative Party suffered a loss of 397 seats, reducing their total to 515, and lost control of 10 councils, retaining leadership in only 6.
In Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham was re-elected as mayor with 63.4% of the votes.
