When do the clocks go forward in the UK — and why do they change?

There is a large stone sundial at Petts Wood in Chislehurst, Kent, and it is slightly unusual — it shows British Summer Time rather than Greenwich Mean Time. The sundial is a memorial to William Willett, a prominent builder who lived nearby and from 1907 onwards campaigned for changing the clocks in spring and summer to give more leisure time in longer evening daylight, as well as saving lighting costs.

He spent years campaigning for the clock changes and received support from David Lloyd George, a young Winston Churchill and many other prominent figures. But the prime minister at the time, Herbert Asquith, was not persuaded and a Daylight Saving Bill was narrowly defeated in parliament in 1909.
