Starting in December, the revamped schedule will bring more frequent services, quicker journey times, and increased seating, particularly across key northern routes. TransPennine Express is set to introduce a revamped timetable in December, promising more frequent services, increased capacity, and enhanced travel choices for passengers traveling throughout northern England and into Scotland. Starting on Sunday, 14 December, the updated schedule is part of a broader overhaul aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and shortening journey times across key routes.
A major highlight of the changes will be on the East Coast Mainline, where services between Newcastle and Edinburgh will rise from five to eight trains per day. This expansion will add approximately 2,000 seats daily, with trains operating at two-hour intervals. For commuters, a new early-morning train will depart to reach Edinburgh by 07:20, providing an ideal option for those looking to start their day early and arrive in the city promptly.
In addition to the increased frequency, passengers will experience faster, more efficient journeys along the vital intercity routes, thanks to better coordination within the rail network. The new timetable aims to address peak demand and enhance the overall passenger experience.
Southern routes will also see notable improvements. For instance, the service connecting Liverpool Lime Street with Cleethorpes via Manchester and Sheffield will now run most Sunday services with six-car trains. This modification provides extra capacity, catering to weekend travellers and those connecting through these major northern hubs.
Additional stops will be incorporated into the new timetable, particularly benefiting local commuters. For example, the 08:09 service from Sheffield to Liverpool Lime Street will now include a Sunday stop at Dore and Totley, offering greater convenience for passengers traveling to or from the station.
The new timetable also introduces several fresh services tailored to weekend travel. A new Sunday morning train from Liverpool Lime Street to Cleethorpes will depart at 08:13, providing a convenient early option for those looking to head to the coast. Additionally, a late-night service from Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street will be available at 23:07, offering more flexibility for evening travellers, particularly those attending events or returning after a night out.
Capacity enhancements extend to the Hull to Liverpool Lime Street route as well. Most services before 19:00 will operate with five or six carriages, contributing an extra 3,500 seats each week. This increase aims to address growing demand, particularly during the busy evening travel period, helping to alleviate congestion on one of the busiest cross-country routes in the region.
