UK chipmaker Alphawave drops forecast over tariff uncertainty

A London chip designer billed as an “Arm wannabe” has become the latest company to warn over uncertainty caused by global tariffs, withholding trading guidance for this year.

Alphawave said that “current global economic uncertainty and the rapidly developing nature of the recently imposed tariff regimes” meant it was currently “not in a position” to provide guidance for this year “or beyond”.

On Sunday, President Trump said he would be announcing the tariff rate on imported semiconductors over the next week.

The Canadian company did not comment on the merits of an approach from San Diego-based Qualcomm, a larger American rival, earlier this month, which sent the group’s value above £1 billion on the day. Qualcomm has until April 29 to either make a
