UK banking system ‘resilient’ amid Trump trade war, assures Rachel Reeves – POLITICO

The remarks come as the U.K. government pushes for a trade deal with the Trump administration to try and ease tariffs placed on the U.K. and other global economies last week.

The U.S. imposed a baseline tariff of 10 percent on all U.K. imports, as well as a 25 percent tax on vehicles and steel and aluminum.

Reeves told MPs that a trade war “is in nobody’s interest” and the government will take the “right decisions that are in our national interest,” while also committing to her fiscal rules.

The chancellor also confirmed she has since spoken to the finance ministers of Canada, Australia, Ireland, France, Spain, and with the European Commission, to reduce the barriers to trade.
