WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump has landed another prestigious – albeit short-term – gig.
The former and future president will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday to mark the start of the day’s trading, according to a source familiar with his plans.
It will be Trump’s first time ringing the stock exchange bell, a symbolic ritual that is often handed over to celebrities and visiting dignitaries.
Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell as first lady in 2019 to mark the one-year anniversary of her “Be Best” initiative, which focused on improving the well-being of young Americans and advocated against cyberbullying.
For Trump, the invitation to ring the stock exchange bell comes just one month after he defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to win a second non-consecutive term in the White House.
U.S. stocks rose sharply after his victory on the hopes that he would push through tax cuts and deregulation, analysts said.
In some ways, Trump’s visit to the New York Stock Exchange will mark a triumphant return home. Trump was born and raised in New York and made his mark on the city as developer of luxury real estate before becoming a reality television personality and trying his hand at politics.
In 2015, Trump famously rode down the escalator of a New York office tower that bears his name and announced his candidacy for president. He beat Democrat Hillary Clinton in a stunning upset the following year, but lost his re-election bid four years later to President Joe Biden.
Trump during his first term changed his permanent residency to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and officially became a resident of the Sunshine State.
