WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A new school year brings new school policies. In August, a big change with a new year for students at Trinity Academy came with a cell phone ban. At Trinity, the school gave students in grades 8-12 lockable magnetic pouches in which they must put their cell phones, earbuds, and smartwatches while at school.
A little more than two months into being cell-phone-free at school, Trinity Academy students who spoke with 12 News said the magnetic pouches, “Yondr bags,” may be the key to saving classrooms.
Students said views on the cell-phone-free policy differ but they have noticed some changes for the better.
Among the improvements they say, is more interaction.
“People actually talk now instead of being on a screen all day,” said Trinity Academy student Jentry Adams.
Student Katie Wilson said her grades have improved with the change.
“I’m less distracted with my phone and I’m more into the conversations,” Wilson said.
The Trinity students who spoke with 12 News said policies like what’s implemented at their school could be beneficial statewide.
“Myself, I do not really feel like I had much of an issue with my phone,” said Trinity Academy student Alex Hobson. “There are kids who are really addicted to their phones. So, regardless of your situation with your phone, I think it’s really beneficial for everybody and especially teens everywhere, regardless of public, private schools wherever you go.”
