Just when you thought you have seen every manifestation of loafers possible, Miuccia Prada serves up a whole new category. Hybrid footwear has been making headlines in recent years, from sneakerinas to Mary-Jane Ugg boots, but the latest mutant creation on the Prada autumn/winter 2025 runway sees loafers being spliced with classic leather knee-high boots. The boofer?
Loafers have long been a key category for both Prada and Miu Miu, ever since they first appeared on the Prada runway for spring/summer 1991. Since then, the style has taken on many forms, including the block-heeled loafer from Prada’s spring/summer 1999 collection and the slingback platforms with loafer fronts from autumn/winter 2003.
Since 2020, the loafer has been a significant commercial driver for both Prada and Miu Miu, from the former’s triangular-logo emblazoned flats to the latter’s Ruches loafers from spring/summer 2025, which look like a classic penny loafer at the front, with balletic elastic ruching at the heel.
For autumn/winter 2025, Mrs Prada and Raf Simons experimented with the loafer some more. The boots were predominantly styled with black minidresses, ensuring this new silhouette was the focal part of the outfit. They feature ruching around the toe in classic fashion, a glossy patent finish and sit snugly on the leg, with a zip up the back of the thigh. There was also a peep-toe version, for those who follow Miuccia’s mantra that “ugly is exciting”.
Miu Miu is also backing the loafer boot for autumn, via its Ruches style in knee-high form. The design emphasises the “soft construction” of the Ruches, thanks to the vintage-look, extra-supple nappa leather which hugs the leg. Something tells us these mutant boots will be a trophy street-style item this fashion month.
