Tate Britain artist admits shoplifting — but ‘not every time’

For some, putting fish fingers in the bread aisle may be worthy of a museum installation. But Ed Atkins has taken more than artistic licence in the supermarket: he has confessed to stealing.

The celebrated artist said he liked to open something “small and sweet” to nibble in the aisles and said one could misuse the self-checkouts to “steal expensive wine for cheap”.

Atkins’s admissions appear in his book Flower, which will be released shortly after this week’s opening of a major survey of his career at Tate Britain. Atkins, 43, told The Times: “Needless to say, I would never do that again. It was in my past.”
