Suzuki, Hyundai, VinFast to expand EVs in India as global market slows

NEW DELHI — Automakers are lining up new electric car models in India — where stricter emission rules are slated to take effect in 2027 — hoping that bigger batteries and swanky features will spark sales in the world’s third largest auto market as EV sales slow down in other developed countries.

About 10 new battery-powered cars will go on sale in the South Asian nation this year, including market leader Maruti Suzuki’s maiden EV, e Vitara, and the electric variant of Hyundai Motor’s Creta, its top selling sports utility vehicle in India. Among others who will roll out new EVs are Indian conglomerate Mahindra group and Vietnam’s VinFast, which eyes a debut in India later this year.
