VESTAL, N.Y. (WBNG) — After top national security officials in the Trump administration used the app “Signal” to exchange classified military plans, questions are being raised about the app’s security.
Binghamton University professor and cybersecurity researcher Thi Tran said the messaging app has been exploited and shouldn’t have been used by officials. A quick Google search of the app revealed to him that Signal and many other similar apps have a record of hacking incidents.
Because messaging apps are so prevalent, Tran says we sometimes use them without giving them a second thought.
“You should not trust the app too much,” Tran stated. “You shouldn’t trust all of the technology that you are playing with, and the moment that when you try to share something, think before the time that it is too late that it can be leaked to the public.”
Tran added that this could be avoided if more training is provided on how information is shared, especially if it’s classified information. He continued by saying that he believes officials should be more careful when using a platform with existing security issues and find alternative modes of secure communication.
