Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, plunged into chaos on July 24, 2025, as a global network outage left users in Canada’s North, the US, UK, India, and beyond without connectivity, prompting widespread concern with the question, “Is Starlink down?” The disruption, reported around noon MT, also crashed Starlink’s website, with users encountering a “timed out” error, per downdetector.ca. Starlink acknowledged the issue on its homepage, stating, “Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating,” and later posted on X at 2:05 p.m. MT, “We are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience.”
The outage hit hard in Canada’s North, where communities like Kugluktuk, Nunavut, and Hay River, NWT, reported immediate disruptions, per cabinradio.ca. Users in the US (Texas, California), UK, and India also confirmed outages, with Downdetector logging over 70,000 reports globally. The website crash compounded frustrations, preventing users from accessing support resources. Meanwhile, the lack of clarity on the cause, speculated on X to involve server issues in Chicago due to a heatwave, though unconfirmed, left users uneasy.
Widespread Impact and User Frustration
In Canada’s North, where Starlink serves 15,000 homes and businesses as a lifeline against cable disruptions from wildfires, the outage disrupted telehealth, education, and daily operations. Users in Kugluktuk and Hay River were among the first to report issues to Cabin Radio, with similar complaints from Texas, Northwest Austin, and India.
The Northwest Territories government, which relies on Starlink but considered alternatives amid US tariff threats, told NNSL in July 2025 that no comparable service exists. The outage, following a 45-minute disruption on July 14, 2025, raised questions about Starlink’s reliability despite its 7,800-satellite constellation.
