The ongoing debate over President Trump’s tariffs has moved into the fashion circles, with viral videos coming out of China purportedly revealing just how high markups will be for luxury goods.
As Trump continues to crack down on imports from China, Chinese factory workers have taken to TikTok to show local labels supposedly produced on similar assembly lines as luxury brands, but for a fraction of the cost. The viral trend, dubbed “Chinese warehouse TikTok,” suggests that you aren’t always paying for higher quality or better materials, as the designers would have you think. And with reports noting that prices for luxury fashion could increase by up to 30% from the tariffs, the question these videos pose is clear: is it even worth paying a premium for designer brands anymore?
The question is further exacerbated by the recent viral “Wirkin” bag — a.k.a. a Walmart bag fashioned to look like an Hermes Birkin. While Hermès’ CEO officially had “no comment” on the Walmart Birkin, some have wondered if the rise of copycat bags — and their ease of availability online — will eventually devalue “the real thing.”
The dupes continue to appear online, with Amazon now selling a decent Goyard tote bag lookalike for under $40. The bag was still online as of this writing.
