Senate bill bans cell phones during class in public schools in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A big change in the new school year for all Alabama public school districts. Lawmakers are making some minor tweaking to a bill that bans students from using cell phones during class.

According to lawmakers in the senate, no one doubts the bill will pass and the governor will sign it.

The name of the bill is FOCUS, which stands for Freeing Our Classrooms of Unnecessary Screens Safety Act. Simply put, the bill bans cell phones in public schools in grades k-through 12.

Tuscaloosa City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Daria says he fully supports it.

“We’ve been pre-planning for a possible cell phone ban and I think anything we can do to prevent distractions in our classrooms is a step forward, but it will be enforceable. We’ve got to do a good bit of precision in our planning and we’re going to do everything we can to give our teachers all the right instruments, all the right policies, and all the right support so they can continue to focus on teaching,” said Dr. Mike Daria.

It Governor Ivey signs the bill, it will be effective immediately, according to her office.
