Searches for Real, Faux Fur Spike After Fashion Month

LONDON — The fall 2025 collections were a step into a time machine to the 1990s, where a fur coat or shawl was as casual as spotting a supermodel on the runways of Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent or Lanvin. Except this time, they were all faux with the exception of Fendi.

The number of furry looks on the runways has caused an uptick in searches for real fur, faux fur and shearling with retailers and rental platforms.

At Net-a-porter, searches for faux fur increased by 220 percent, while searches for shearling fur spiked by 250 percent between Feb. 24 to March 10.

Victoria Prew, the founder of the circular clothing platform Hurr added that in the same week “we have seen search and rentals for shearling soar with an uplift of 110 percent on last year.”

The fur-mania kicked off in New York with deliciously chocolate fur coats at Anna Sui; cropped jackets that looked like coyote fur at Khaite, and colored fur in amethyst purple or sage green at Michael Kors.

In London, buyers from Mytheresa, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Moda Operandi and Nordstrom praised the fur-like pieces the city had to offer, which were apparent on the runways of Burberry, Conner Ives, Toga and Simone Rocha, who sent down 30 looks that incorporated faux fur, from a furry bra, oversize scarf to an over-the-knee coat.

But Milan was where fur really came alive as a trend.

Fendi celebrated its centenary year with a collection that opened with a real fur coat that featured two tones of brown. Twenty-nine of the 84 looks shown on the runway featured fur.

According to fashion search engine Tagwalk, the Milan shows had more than 280 looks featuring fur or faux fur, while 211 looks from the Paris shows featured fur-like pieces.

Fur that looked real was all over.

At Maximilian Davis’ Ferragamo show, models’ bare feet slid into furry flip-flops; big, fluffy trapper hats took over models’ heads at Etro, and faux-fur collars sat neatly on the lapels at Prada.

“While faux fur has traditionally been linked mainly to outerwear, for fall 2025, we will see it make its way across all categories,” said Kay Barron, fashion director at Net-a-porter.

“This is a trend we’re buying into and expanding our offering to align with. In addition to faux fur and shearling coats and jackets, we’re also seeing more subtle detailing on scarves, collars, dresses, skirts and even footwear, which will undoubtedly provide an entry point into the trend,” she added.

On the resale and rental platforms front, the response to fur has been somewhat mixed, although real and faux fur are experiencing an uprise.

A Vestiaire Collective spokesperson said this year there has been a “notable rise in searches for fur coats, reflecting a broader interest in vintage fashion and driven by the mob wife aesthetic.”

The spokesperson added that the platform “actively encourages consumers to transition toward more sustainable alternatives.”

At luxury rental platform Cercle, it’s the Italian brands driving the boost in searches. The platform only carries faux fur and had an 8 percent increase for Prada fur items, while faux-fur pieces from Versace and Dolce & Gabbana have also been popular.

The peer-to-peer rental platform By Rotation said it had a 42.25 percent increase in rentals of faux fur and wool coats ahead of Milan Fashion Week.
