RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -A bill that would have given parents in South Dakota more oversight over their kid’s app use has stalled.
Senate Bill 180 would have required minors to get their parents’ permission to download apps and make in-app purchases.
Nicole Lopez, Director of Youth Safety Policy at Meta testified in support of the bill. She says while she’s disappointed the bill didn’t get through, she views it as one step in the legislative process. She says the momentum behind the concept of the bill is building.
“I believe there are at least eight or nine other states that have introduced app store verification and parental consent bills,” said Lopez. “And so, you know, it’s making progress through Utah. I believe Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, New Mexico, and others have introduced versions of it, so bottom line is parents are being heard,” explained Lopez.
Lopez says she would return to Pierre to testify if the bill is tried again. Meta, Snap, and X sent a joint letter last week urging support for the bill. The bill was deferred to the 41st day of the legislature by the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.
