More than 500 participants – researchers, viticulturists, oenologists, producers and policy-makers from 51 member countries of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine – are expected to attend the World Congress of Vine and Wine in Chisinau on Monday, which is being held for the first time in Moldova, IPN reports.

The theme of the Congress will be ‘Charting the future of wine: Embracing resilience, increasing value, encouraging innovation’. Four panel discussions will be organised during the event, covering over 300 topics of global interest in the wine sector.

The event will also be attended by experts from the Republic of Moldova, who will present the latest studies and results of applied research in viticulture and winemaking. ‘A topic of interest will be the link between responsible wine consumption and health, as well as the use of wine by-products in functional products with beneficial potential for the body’, said Gheorghe Arpentin, President of the Scientific Committee of the OIV, university professor and PhD in technical sciences.

The congress will also highlight the potential of indigenous grape varieties, such as Rara Neagra and Feteasca Neagra, in the context of current industry trends such as precision viticulture, the use of climate data to prevent grapevine diseases or the integration of artificial intelligence in the wine assembly process.

The discussion sessions will take place on 16, 17 and 18 June at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau and in maib park. In addition, several technical visits to the most famous wineries in the Republic of Moldova are planned, as well as a festive dinner.

On the occasion of the event, the ‘Stefan cel Mare’ Public Garden in Chisinau will be decorated with photo areas and thematic artistic compositions, and an exhibition dedicated to the most representative Moldovan vine varieties will be organised on the Classics Alley. Also on the first day of the Congress, 15 local wineries will have the opportunity to present their wine products, which have won awards at international competitions, to international experts.

The Republic of Moldova has been a member of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine since 3 April 2001, being the first country from the former Commonwealth of Independent States to join the OIV. In 2024, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine marked 100 years since its founding, and the congress held in Chisinau officially opens the organisation’s second centenary.
