Last year Jenny Gilruth, the education secretary, told head teachers that they would be given government backing to introduce mobile phone bans which could lead to pupils being required to hand over devices before class and even on school trips. It has come as welcome news to many educators, who link mobile phones to all kinds of problems, such as reduced attention spans, cheating in tests, filming instances of bullying, and mental health issues as a result of unchecked social media access.
