As many residents prepare for the spring cleaning season, new data shared by BusinessWaste.co.uk highlights the joint fourth highest charges in the UK faced by London residents for removing items like old sofas, mattresses, or wardrobes.
The research gathered figures from 382 councils across the country, focusing on the minimum charges levied, the cost per item, fridge collection charges, and any discounts available.
Among London councils, Richmond upon Thames has the steepest rate, with a minimum charge of £76.
Despite being the fourth highest in the UK overall, this fee covers up to five items, with each additional item costing £8.90.
Residents over 60 or on a low income receive discounts or free collections.
Fridge collections aren’t covered in the bulky waste charge, requiring a separate fee of £67 – the UK’s highest.
Another hefty charge is in Havering, where residents pay a minimum of £66 for between one and three items.
The cost for six items increases to £117 and rises to £168 for nine items.
There are no available discounts for Havering residents, but fridges are included in the collection cost.
Brent residents face a minimum charge of £55.
However, those receiving council tax benefit or pension credit are offered one free bulky waste collection per year.
This particular charge covers up to five items.
London, alongside the South West, holds the joint fourth highest average regional charge of £32.70.
Northern Ireland, conversely, claims the lowest average minimum charge at just £5.97, while the South East claims the highest at £44.81.
This signifies a considerable difference of 651 per cent, showing just how differing the rates can be across the UK.
Despite the high prices in some areas, some London councils, notably Enfield, Harrow, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, offer free bulky waste collections.
Greenwich has the most affordable rate in the capital with a minimum charge of £13.09.
