Britain’s biggest retailers are urging the government to scrap the tax rule that allows Chinese ecommerce giants such as Shein and Temu to ship cheap goods to the UK, amid fears that they will flood the market in response to President Trump’s tariff regime.
Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), said retailers were “very concerned” about more Chinese goods being rerouted from the United States to the UK as a result of the tariffs introduced last week.
Sainsbury’s was understood to have been among the retailers to have raised concerns, as were Currys and other electronics, clothing, toys and homeware retailers.
