Rachel Reeves’s spring statement must offer “a bit of a reset”, George Osborne, a former chancellor, has warned.
“The government didn’t get off to the best of starts but they had a lot of goodwill,” he told Bloomberg TV at the HSBC Global Investment Summit in Hong Kong. “They inherited a lot of problems but the result is, at summits like this on the other side of the world, there is quite a negative sentiment about the UK and that needs to be changed.”
He called on Reeves to “cement some of the good work of recent weeks” and said she must show “they have got an economic plan, the plan is pro-business, the country is going to live within its means”.
