Ashley Nell Tipton has joined San Diego College of Continuing Education as the newest instructor in its award-winning Clothing and Textiles Program. A trailblazer in plus-size fashion and the winner of Project Runway Season 14, Tipton is eager to inspire a new wave of designers through hands-on instruction.
This spring, she’s teaching Sewn Product Construction, Industrial Sewing Fundamentals, and Pattern Fitting—tuition-free courses designed to make fashion education accessible. Classes take place in the college’s cutting-edge fiber technology lab, where students have access to industrial-grade machines for printing, curing, and cutting both synthetic and natural fabrics. This setup allows aspiring designers to produce full-scale garments while minimizing waste.
“Having access to free classes and certificate programs in clothing and textiles—paired with state-of-the-art equipment—is truly transformative for anyone looking to break into the industry,” Tipton said. “I know firsthand how difficult it can be without the right resources. What SDCCE offers is life-changing—it removes financial barriers and gives students the tools to take their next step, whether that’s launching their brand or entering the industry.”
Located in Point Loma, SDCCE is a hub for emerging designers and entrepreneurs. Students can choose from eight tuition-free certificate programs, including Advanced Sewn Product Construction, Industrial Sewing and Manufacturing, Patternmaking for Product Development, and Product and Textile Surface Treatments.
For Tipton, teaching feels like a natural progression. “Throughout my career, I realized my passion isn’t just about making clothes—it’s about helping others find their creative voice,” she said. “Fashion should be for everyone, and teaching allows me to share what I’ve learned with those just starting.”
SDCCE President Dr. Tina M. King highlighted the significance of Tipton’s appointment. “We take great pride in bringing instructors with real-world industry experience into our classrooms. Ashley’s success as a designer and her time on Project Runway provide invaluable insights, bridging the gap between education and the realities of the fashion industry,” King said.
Dean Myesha Jackson echoed that sentiment, emphasizing how Tipton’s presence strengthens the program. “Our Clothing and Textiles Program is designed to be dynamic, innovative, and connected to industry trends. Having someone like Ashley, who has broken barriers and continues to shape the fashion world, ensures our students get both inspiration and practical skills.”
A San Diego native from Encanto, Tipton has been teaching for five years, starting her academic career at Palomar College. Before becoming a professor, she made waves in the fashion world as a designer, model, and influencer, amassing nearly 200,000 followers.
“I remember how tough it was when I started in this industry, and now I want to be the mentor I wish I had,” she said. “Teaching gives me the chance to break down barriers, encourage self-expression, and help students build confidence in their style. Watching them grow creatively is just as rewarding as launching a new collection. It’s about giving back to the community that has supported me.”
At SDCCE, she teaches a diverse group of students, including immigrants, refugees, and entrepreneurs eager to develop skills for a sustainable future. “What makes this experience so special is the resilience and unique perspectives each student brings,” Tipton said. “Being part of their journey and watching them gain confidence is incredibly inspiring.”
For her, teaching at SDCCE is a full-circle moment. Before graduating from Fashion Careers College, she took classes at the College of Continuing Education to refine her skills. “I know firsthand how valuable these programs are and how they open doors,” she said.
Even with her role as an instructor, Tipton remains deeply involved in fashion. She’s currently expanding her collection and collaborating with Sure Grip International on a stylish new skate boot.
