Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, is speaking to the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge this evening.
Back when he was an MP, Burnham wanted to introduce a Hillsborough Law – something that has not yet come into being.
Part of this would be a legal duty of candour – i.e. a requirement to tell the truth – from all public bodies, public servants and officials.
Sir Keir Starmer said he would introduce such a law, but has not yet done so.
Burnham says he wants the law to be right.
On the duty of candour, he says: “I see all of the emphasis people put on the duty of candour and rightly so, because it’s such an important measure that people would be required to tell the truth at the first time of asking.
“And in my experience as a minister, you know, that is a crucial reform, because sometimes the Treasury says in these situations, oh, there must be no admission of liability.
“And over time that becomes half-truths and statements that are, you know, as I say, you know, not correct.”
