On Her Mind: Tulsa woman starts fashion business after finding sobriety | News

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa woman is sharing her journey to sobriety and how it led to her dream job.

“I feel like I dimmed my shine with alcohol. I wanted to be part of the group and also having social anxieties, I would drink because I would be nervous to be in a group,” said Kristy Eller DeBoer

Kristy confronted the skeletons in her closet four years ago.

“If you’re really stressed or you’re having difficulty with your parenting, the solution at the end of the day is to have several glasses of wine,” said Dr. Sarah Church of Wholeview Wellness.

Clinical Psychologist Dr. Sarah Church is the founder and director of Wholeview Wellness. She says biology causes women to feel the effects of alcohol more quickly.

There’s a telescopic effect. Women progress more quickly from their first drink, to developing alcohol-related problems and seeking treatment, and having just one drink a day raises your risk of breast cancer between seven and 10 percent.

“We really want to encourage people to find other ways to relax at the end of the day,” said Dr. Church.

Sobriety brought Kristy clarity, a new passion for fitness and health led to more confidence.

“I had to go through this transformation physically, mentally, spiritually,” said Kristy.

She traded empty bottles for marathon medals, PLNK Fitness classes and a renewed sense of purpose.

“I’m helping people find confidence and not only just with their clothes but with who they are,” said Kristy.

Today, the former journalist spends time in other people’s closets, not to find their skeletons, but to help the discover their style.

“I think of it as storytelling through clothes and showing who they are as a person and how they want to show up in the world,” said Kristy.

A full KED Styled package starts with Kristy asking a ton of questions. She does a closet edit, curating looks with what you already have, takes notes and identifies what you’re missing, like a belt or a black skirt, then shops with a list.

She makes a look book, showing you all the different ways to style your outfits and says a lot of her clients tell her the same thing..

“I would have never put that together but I love it. So that’s when I feel like yes I nailed it they’re so happy because I’m also giving them permission to show up as their best self,” said Kristy.

She can also help you find outfits for special events or pack for a trip. She shares it all, the outfits, the accessories and her sobriety journey, on social media.

“Authenticity is something where you can show up as yourself everyday and not as a character, not trying to pretend to be someone that you’re not and that’s pretty great. I think that when we can get vulnerable, then that’s when we can connect,” said Kristy.
