It looks like Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed bell-to-bell cellphone ban has some critics among lawmakers and school administrators.
Last week, Capital Tonight spoke with New York’s Superintendents’ Association and School Boards Association about why they are pushing for less stringent rules around cellphones.
Both groups are open to the state Senate’s one-house budget proposal which would allow local school districts to determine if phones may be used outside of the classroom. They also want the governor to consider a one-house proposal from state Assembly Education Chair Michael Benedetto, which requires districts to establish cell phone policies tailored to their own “specific school environments,”
But the powerful teachers’ unions strongly support the bell-to-bell ban and are pushing back.
Melinda Person, president of the New York State United Teachers, spoke with Capital Tonight.
