Nostalgia and Gender-Fluid Fashion Lead 2025 Festival Trends

With major events like Coachella, Tecate Pa’l Norte and Primavera Sound Barcelona (to name a few) quickly approaching, attendees are already on the hunt for the trendiest pieces. According to Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist Amanda Massi, this season’s festival fashion will be deeply rooted in genderless throwback styles.

The stylist, who’s dressed celebrities like Macy Gray, Susan Carol and Elyanna—who performed at Coachella in 2023 in outfits styled by Massi—said denim will be especially prevalent at festivals because its versatility allows for customization, making it easy for festival-goers to “stand out in a crowd.”

“Denim has a rich history of being associated with youth culture, rebellion and the counterculture movement, all of which tie into festival environments,” Massi told SJ Denim. “The resurgence of vintage, 90s-inspired looks (like distressed or acid-wash denim) fuels this nostalgia, which is amplified by denim’s ability to evoke a sense of timelessness.”

In line with the current craving for nostalgia, boho has emerged as a prominent trend.

The style—described as “free-spirited and eclectic, embracing a mix of cultures”—has already driven a surge in key pieces like flared jeans and mini denim dresses, with Q1 arrivals up 16 percent and 96 percent year-over-year (YoY) respectively, according to Karis Munday, retail analyst at EDITED.

“Festival-goers are turning to the 2010s for nostalgic boho inspiration, with moto boho—which blends feminine and masculine elements—themes poised to dominate in 2025,” Munday said. “As a result, retailers are investing in accompanying trends like suede jackets (Q1 arrivals up 190 percent) and suede bottoms (Q1 arrivals up 500 percent YoY).”

Pop star power

Pop stars are also emerging as powerful drivers of festival trends this year.

Take 35-time Grammy Award winner and global icon Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, for example. With her new Levi’s campaign and the upcoming Cowboy Carter tour—kicking off April 28—she’s helped usher in a refreshing Western-inspired narrative for festival season.

Arrivals of bootcut jeans grew 63 percent year-over-year in the first quarter compared to 2024, as stars like Beyoncé, Chappell Roan and Kendrick Lamar continue to fuel the style’s resurgence.

Double denim is also making a comeback, repackaged for festival season with pieces like mini denim skirts, which accounted for 68 percent of denim skirt arrivals in 2025, Munday noted. Embellished details are gaining momentum as well, with embroidered styles increasing 48 percent in Q1 versus the same time last year.

Meanwhile, fashion rule breakers Charli XCX and Troye Sivan have contributed to the rise of micro shorts, with denim options up 42 percent versus Q1 2024.

The pop star duo are also leading the charge for gender-fluid fashion, Massi said.

Troye’s [aesthetic] resonates strongly with festival-goers, many of whom embrace individuality and feel empowered by the idea of expressing themselves through fashion in a free and inclusive space,” Massi said. “Whether it’s his fluid mix of masculine and feminine looks or Charli XCX’s playful, hyper-feminine yet androgynous outfits, their approach to fashion invites others to experiment and express their own identities freely—something that fits perfectly with the open-minded spirit of festivals.”
