HARRISBURG — Slippery Rock University President Karen Riley was introduced and officially sworn in as an appointee of the Pennsylvania Rural Population Revitalization Commission on Jan. 10
Riley, along with 15 other appointees from across the state, are part of the newly created commission to review and recommend solutions to attract and retain residents in rural areas of Pennsylvania. The appointees were recognized during a Pennsylvania Farm Show news conference.
“I’m honored to serve on this commission and address some of the challenges that are facing the rural communities we serve,” Riley said. “Our efforts align with the mission of SRU and other public universities to enhance the quality of life for people in Pennsylvania and to grow our state’s economy. I look forward to collaborating with members of the commission, as well as local business and community leaders, to find ways to ensure that rural Pennsylvania is a destination for people to learn, work, live and prosper.”
Established last year, the commission will focus on the challenges of rural Pennsylvania and recommend necessary legislation and regulatory changes to support revitalization.
Appointees include members of the state legislators, county commissioners, chambers of commerce presidents and other civic leaders. Riley was appointed to the commission to represent Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.
Kelly to lead subcommittee
U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-16) will lead the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Tax in the new Congress.
Kelly led the committee in the last Congress. The committee helps review budget spending.
“2025 will be the Super Bowl of Tax as we work to extend the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, which spurred the greatest economy the United States has seen in generations,” Kelly said. “There is a lot of work ahead, and I’m ready to work with President Trump, Speaker Johnson and Chairman (Jason) Smith to fulfill the mandate set forth by the American people.”
National chain opens
Wingstop, the national chicken wing restaurant chain headquartered in Texas, opened its newest restaurant Monday in the new-look Call’s Plaza at 1700 Wilmington Road, Neshannock Township.
The chain operates a previously vacant space between the Grocery Outlet and a soon-to-open Dollar Tree (formerly Family Dollar). The plaza’s former Rite Aid building, as well as the pharmacy’s downtown location, remain vacant.
