CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — In a historic circa 1860 home on Charleston’s peninsula, a mother-daughter team is making waves in the sustainable fashion industry.
Susan “Susu” Smythe and her daughter, Nancy Claire, are the creative forces behind Kiku Refashion, a brand that repurposes vibrant Japanese kimonos into high-end, one-of-a-kind fashion pieces.
Susu Smythe, a longtime lawyer, has embraced the challenge of running a business, but she finds joy in the sewing and creation process.

Her affinity for Japanese aesthetics began during a year-long stay in Japan, which inspired her to transform her historic home into a reflection of her love for Japanese culture.
“We Americans don’t quite feel that way. And so we have the benefit of being able to buy these kimonos, these used kimonos and repurpose them,” said Smythe, referencing the Japanese cultural aversion to wearing used clothing.
The retail studio at the back of the house showcases Susu’s craftsmanship, while the upstairs closets and photography studio are filled with more kimonos and fabric.

Nancy Claire, who serves as the company’s photographer, enjoys working alongside her mother.
“I feel like I’m such a slouch compared to her,” said Nancy, admiring her mother’s ability to juggle a legal career and a burgeoning fashion brand. “I don’t know how she does it all. I think it gives me some inspiration to keep going, and to get up earlier, to keep up with you.”
Susu remains committed to her craft, saying, “This one has held me much longer. And I’ve invested in so many kimono that I think that I’ll have to keep sewing.”
With a shared passion and a unique vision, the Smythes are poised to leave a lasting mark on the fashion world.
