Masters players, patrons are showing their passion for fashion

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – As always, the players and patrons at the Masters are making waves in the fashion world.

Over the years, the style and boldness of golf clothing has certainly changed.

Whether it’s emulating Tiger Woods’ Sunday red performances – or someone trying to dethrone world No. 1, players are dressing to impress.

Australian Cameron Smith raised eyebrows when he wore a blue blazer Wednesday. It was such a topic of conversation that even Jason Day, the focus of last year’s Masters fashion frenzy, weighed in on it.

Also eye-catching this week was Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who on Thursday wore a yellow and red ensemble that brought Big Macs to mind. Although it was hard not to notice, it didn’t stir as much discussion as Smith’s blazer.

When we saw Smith in the blazer, we thought he was just casually strolling the course and couldn’t actually play golf in it.

But he did.

He was asked about it on Thursday.

“I met Charlie, the Grayson guy, at teams week this week, and we had a couple of beers and maybe even a couple too many beers, and we got to talking about fashion. He said, ‘It would be great if you wore a blazer at the Masters; I think it’s the place to do it,’ and I agreed to it. I’m a man of my word, so I did it,” he said.

It was actually good, though, he said.

“I mean, for how a sport coat or a blazer should feel, that one I was able to swing in pretty easy. It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out. Yeah, it was good,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a fashion guru by any standard, but I felt good in it.”

Day is definitely a fashion guru – a role he embraces.

Day thought the blazer was a great look for Smith.

“If he rocks it, then I’m happy for him. I actually went up to him and felt it and felt his pants. I’m like, if he can play in it, great. I would have buttoned it up. I would have had at least buttoned up, but he played with it open. I don’t mind it. I could see myself playing in something like that. So just putting it out there.

Last year, he was the talk of the Masters when he wore a vest that was a bit too much for many people.

It was on the Friday of the 2024 Masters week when he wore a sweater vest with big letters stretching across the front that spelled out “No. 313. Malbon Golf Championship.” He recalls wearing a rain suit Friday morning on the 14th tee as he resumed the rain-delayed first round alongside Tiger Woods and Max Homa.

“Max and Tiger said, ‘That’s kind of boring,’” Day said. He already had been turning heads with his Malbon Golf attire the past four months, most of it baggy, a throwback look in golf.

“I said, ‘Wait until you see what I have on underneath.’ I take my jacket off, and they didn’t know what to say. As I was playing, it got crazier and crazier on social media.”

FASHION STATEMENTS AT THE MASTERS

Maybe a little too crazy for Augusta National. The club asked him to take the vest off.

Fashion is a big part of Day’s life and look.

He realizes some of his apparel can look “wacky,” but doesn’t care as long as he likes it.

One look that recently caused a stir was an old-school, gray sweatsuit that looked like pajamas.

“I remember somebody sent me a text or a tweet that ‘JDay has come out of bed and gone to the golf course,’” Day said.

But fashion is important to people who are just starting to get into the sport, he said.

“The next generation are kids picking up golf for the first time,” he said. “And fashion is a big part of their world.

Augusta National has always been part of the fashion scene. Who can forget when Anna Davis put bucket hats on the fashion radar three years ago during the Augusta National Women’s Amateur?

Masters competitor Joe Highsmith might yet do the same this with his safari hats.

He only wishes he could get one with a Masters logo on it, but the patron shop isn’t selling them.

“I’m going to be lobbying for that because they didn’t have any in stock,” he said.

Ludvig Åberg was among the players showing off his ensemble.

“This is the new originals line from Adidas, which is new for this week,” he said, letting the public see it. ” I like it. I’ve always sort of been interested in fashion. I wear a lot of original stuff off the golf course.”

From top-of-the-line brands to Christmas gifts from the family, to pants that make you do a double take, you never truly know what to expect from Masters patrons.

“The outfits that people pull out here is so crazy to me. it’s so fun,” said Brylee Powers and Mary Brinn Chappell.

Day has noticed the patron fashion, and he liked it.

“I noticed a lot of people wear green here. It’s fantastic. This is just a very classy group of people that come through here. Everyone is dressed nice. Everyone is enjoying themselves,” Day said.

“It’s kind of like a horse racing event or something like that when everyone kind of comes out and they’re wearing some really nice clothes. They just do it right here at Augusta.”

For many of the patrons, the fashion is self-designed, often with a Masters theme.

We met one patron who found vintage Masters hats on eBay, cut out all the logos and made a purse out of them.

Other patrons have decked out their hats, clothing and accessories with badges from past years.
