Man jailed after dog attacked police officer in Bournemouth

Andre Willis, 32, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court to 22 months’ imprisonment. The dog has been destroyed.

Refusing to comply with the officer’s instructions to put the dog into his car, Willis released the dog and fled the scene.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier then bit the officer several times, causing injuries to the officer’s leg and armpit.

Hayley Brearley, a senior crown prosecutor with CPS Wessex, said: “Andre Willis’ conduct fell way below the standard of responsible dog ownership.

“The officer involved was simply doing their job when they were subjected to a terrifying and painful attack.

“Emergency workers should be able to carry out their duties without fear of harm.

“Where there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest, we will not hesitate to prosecute. Our thoughts are with the officer who was injured in the line of duty.”

Willis, 33 of South Norwood, London, pleaded guilty to one count of being the owner of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control in a public place and one count of driving whilst disqualified on May 20 at Bournemouth Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 22 month’s imprisonment On July 31 and has been disqualified from driving for a total of 55 months.
