3rd May 2025 – (Hong Kong) A Mainland tourist recently expressed frustration during his visit to Hong Kong when he encountered difficulties using hotel power outlets. He discovered that Hong Kong employs three-pronged plugs, unlike the two-pronged plugs used in mainland China. In a video he posted, he attempted to insert his mainland plug but was unsuccessful, remarking that Hong Kong’s technology seemed “backward.”
The clip sparked criticism online, with many users labelling the tourist as ignorant and arrogant. Comments included remarks about his failure to do basic research before traveling, and some criticised his attitude, suggesting that he expected the world to accommodate him. Others noted that the three-pronged British-style plugs used in Hong Kong offer enhanced safety features.
In his five-second video, the tourist, who identified himself as staying at the Sheraton Hotel, lamented the technological shortcomings of Hong Kong, stating, “Although the economy is good, the technology is quite backward.” This led to further mockery on social media, with users posting screenshots and sarcastically pointing out his lack of understanding regarding local electrical standards.
While some defended the tourist, arguing that the hotel should provide universal outlets, others countered that using such adapters in Hong Kong could be illegal and might void insurance coverage in case of accidents.
Several users also highlighted that the hotel outlets feature USB charging ports, suggesting that the tourist simply overlooked this option. Comments pointed out the convenience of these ports, with users questioning how he could miss them.
