8th February 2025 – (Hong Kong) Recently, a Hong Kong man took to social media to share his shocking account of allegedly witnessing a mainland tourist defecating in a bush near the University of Hong Kong. Accompanying his post were photographs depicting a man in a grey shirt pulling up his trousers, while two companions waited nearby with luggage. Following this incident, the man was seen embracing a female companion.
The post garnered significant attention, with many netizens questioning the validity of the claims. In response to the scepticism, the poster later returned to the scene and uploaded a video as “evidence,” lamenting, “It’s 2025, and there are still people doing this in bushes.” Under Hong Kong law, public urination or defecation is illegal, with first-time offenders facing fines of up to HK$5,000.
Despite the controversy, some commenters defended the man, suggesting he may have been in a desperate situation. Others, however, expressed outrage over the behaviour, asserting that such actions should not occur in public spaces, especially given the availability of nearby facilities.
