Lewis Hamilton lands Vogue Met cover as fashion icon status explodes: "A real honour"

Lewis Hamilton has cemented his place in fashion not only as he appears on the cover of the legendary Met issue of Vogue magazine, but also as co-chair of the biggest night of fashion, the Met Gala. The seven-time world champion  shared a photo of the black and white cover, with the driver wearing a classic tuxedo.

Growing up in London with little money, fashion wasn’t a focus of his early life.

“As a teenager I didn’t have any money for clothes; my family and I spent it all on racing” he wrote in his Vogue feature. 105 Formula 1 wins later and his life has changed dramatically, partnering with the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and more recently Lululemon. Since moving to Ferrari after 12 seasons with Mercedes, his fashion has evolved from more experimental to a more classic look, reflected on the Vogue feature.

Co-chairing the 2025 exhibition, ten years since he first attended, the Ferrari driver said the following:

“Firstly, it’s a real honour and privilege and something that I’ve been working on for a long, long time to get into that position. Just getting to go to the Met Gala was always something really special.

“Having seen the hosts before, I remember I would look on and think ‘it would be cool one day to be a host’. Anna’s been so gracious as to include me within that group.

“It is such a prestigious event, but that one thing showed that it can be a great event and also have a positive impact,” he added. “She’s brought me on board and that’s what we’re doing on a bigger scale now moving forwards, so I’m really grateful to be part of that.”

The driver will serve alongside Colman Domingo, rapper A$AP Rocky, singer Pharrell Williams, and Vogue’s legendary editor Anna Wintour at the gala, as he helps to support the theme of ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ at the event in May.

Commenting on his relationship with the Met Gala, he wrote the following:

“Of course, I always wanted to go to the Met Gala, and I got invited for the first time in 2015. It’s always been a privilege to attend, but in 2021, I no longer wanted to just be another person in the room.

“I was working with Law Roach, who is a dear friend, and I was like, ‘What if we created a table together where we invite a few up-and-coming Black designers, have them dress some guests, and we all show up together—so it’s about creating space and opportunity?’ And also, I was going to buy the table myself.

“Of course, everyone looked great, but I felt like that night opened up a dialogue about amplifying underrepresented voices and talent.”

With a focus on celebrating black culture, Hamilton hopes this gala will “send a message.”

“If you think about where we are in the world—and particularly in the States, in terms of people pulling back on diversity—I think this Met Gala sends a really strong message that we must continue to celebrate and elevate Black history.”

The 2025 Met Gala will take place 5 May.
