I refer to your letter, “A shame Hong Kong appeared shabby in YouTube star’s live stream” on April 8.

IShowSpeed’s recent visit to Hong Kong has sparked discussions about missed promotional opportunities. However, I see it differently – his visit highlights something special about our city.

Unlike some mainland cities which carefully plan influencer trips, Hong Kong allowed Speed and his fans to have a more spontaneous, real experience. This unfiltered energy reflects the city’s vibrant, free spirit – not a place of staged perfection but one where life happens naturally.

While the “mega-event economy” has been a focal point in tourism promotion, it’s important to recognise that today’s audiences often learn about cities through live streaming, not just fireworks and concerts. That said, the chaos during his visit shows we need better collaboration with influencers. We don’t need heavy-handed management, but basic support like crowd guidance and safety coordination can help. It keeps things fun, not dangerous.

However, endorsing controversial figures like Speed, whose actions have sometimes been divisive, may not align with Hong Kong’s values. Therefore, the private sector should take the lead in engaging influencers, consistent with our free-market principles, while the government focuses on maintaining public order.

By embracing flexibility and safeguarding our city’s reputation, Hong Kong can continue to be an authentic and open destination.
