Legislature to hash out final bill prohibiting cell phones in schools

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – North Dakota lawmakers passed two versions of a bill that would keep mobile devices out of students’ hands during the school day.

Both of them require school districts to develop policies that would have phones stowed away and put on silent during instructional time. Some exemptions are included, such as for health reasons or if the device is needed for an Individualized Learning Plan (IEP).

The two differences are that one bill also requires private schools to follow the same law and states that all entities ensure the policy is clearly communicated to students and parents.

Lawmakers will set up a conference committee to create a final bill at a later time.
