Kolkata: A large number of children suffered from renal diseases and the lack of awareness often led to a delay in diagnosis, said doctors. Institute of Child Health (ICH) Kolkata on Wednesday, the eve of World Kidney Day, announced its collaboration with Birmingham Children’s Hospital for nephrology care among children.
The institute is expected to function as the sister renal training centre for paediatrics for the Birmingham facility. Senior doctors, including ICH director Apurba Ghosh, principal Joydeb Ray and transplant surgeon Pradip Chakrabarti spoke about the disease among children at the meet. “We have started exchanging knowledge by discussing cases every month,” said Rajiv Sinha, paediatric nephrology head at the Park Circus hospital.
Last year, the trust-run hospital recorded 3,038 OPD consultations for kidney issues among children, 652 admissions and nine kidney transplants. But lack of resources and awareness continued to pose a hurdle, said doctors. The hospital will launch an online initiative to address common concerns about kids’ kidney health.
