Keir Starmer vows to end UK’s ‘soft touch’ on illegal immigration

Sir Keir Starmer has said that illegal immigration makes him angry because it is unfair on “ordinary working people”, as he vowed to solve the issue “once and for all”.

He said there was “nothing progressive or compassionate about turning a blind eye” to the issue because it gave asylum seekers “false hope” to continue making the journeys.

In a speech opening a landmark global illegal immigration summit at Lancaster House in London, the prime minister said Britain had been a “soft touch” on illegal migration for too long.

This had given people smugglers an “open invitation” to send migrants to the UK because the police and intelligence agencies were not working together, Starmer added.
