Keep kidneys healthy with regular screening, active lifestyle: Doctors

Patna: While kidney-related health issues have witnessed a manifold rise in recent years, health experts pointed towards a delay in regular check-up as one of the reasons leading to more damage to the vital organ.
With World Kidney Day being observed on March 13, doctors point out that diabetes and hypertension, besides urinary tract infection, as the main causes behind kidney problems.
Not only adults, even children, suffer from kidney ailment, and early screening is a must to curb the situation from getting worse.
Padma Shri awardee and founder of Patliputra National Kidney Foundation, Dr Hemant Kumar, said children suffer from nephrotic syndrome, a condition where kidneys leak too much protein in urine, and if left unattended, could lead to kidney failure.
“This problem in the children could be because of reasons like immune system dysfunction, environmental or genetic issues. Routine check-up of urine should be made mandatory in schools,” he said, adding unlike other health issues, which start showing symptoms, kidney ailment symptoms come only after 50% of the damage is done.
Talking about adults, he said 75% of kidney patients have a history of diabetes and hypertension.
Professor and head of the nephrology department at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Om Kumar, said on an average, the footfall of kidney patients has doubled in the past decade at his hospital. He cited various reasons for this increase, including more people coming to the hospital for general screening, longevity of life, and an increase in diabetes and hypertension.
Senior consultant at a reputed private hospital, Dr Deepak Kumar, pointed out that delay in regular check-up aggravate the situation. “Most patients come in advanced stage, and by that time, 60 to 70% damage is done.”
Talking particularly about Bihar, Dr Hemant said the state falls in a high endemic zone for diabetes, one of the main reasons for kidney issues. “Present-day lifestyle, which is more sedentary and inclusion of junk food, is indirectly affecting the kidney,” he said. “Those who have diabetes or hypertension have two to three times more chances of having chronic kidney disease,” he said.
