Jane Fonda is proudly single at 87—which means embracing a bedtime ritual she wouldn’t have considered when she was dating someone. In an interview with The Times published on Saturday, July 19, the Grace and Frankie actress cheekily revealed the unexpected item she always wears to bed.
“A flannel nightgown—because I’m single,” she quipped to the publication. However, Fonda—who was last romantically linked to record producer Richard Perry in 2017—clarified, “I never wore them when I was with a man.”

The Book Club actress also dished on her other fashion choices outside the bedroom, describing her style ethos as “simple.” While Fonda called her yoga pants her “most treasured” item of clothing (she explained, “They are easy to put on and take off and they’re comfortable,”), she also opened up about a major fashion regret she had: The “awful” dress she wore while winning her second Oscar for Coming Home in 1979.

She explained, “I was married to a politician [Tom Hayden] and one of his big supporters was a fashion designer [James Reva]. My husband said, ‘Let him design you a dress.’ I did and it was awful and I won the Oscar in it. Anything for politics. It was just poor taste.”
Fonda, who ditched her signature blonde hair in 2020 with a icy silver reveal on the red carpet, also shared a style silver lining about going gray. “I wear more color, including yellow and green,” she revealed. “Even I can look good in those colours, and not a lot of people can say that.

Fonda previously opened up about coming to terms with her changing body and style, revealing that it’s even impacted her clothes shopping habits in a February interview with The New York Times.
“I basically don’t go shopping,” she said. “Occasionally I will order something online if I’m on a trip and going into forests and need quick-drying pants and shirts—that kind of thing. But I don’t like to shop. I feel uncomfortable.”
The Barbarella actress added, “I would say 90 percent I’ve made peace with my body, but there’s still that 10 percent. It’s hard to stand in the fitting room and put clothes on and not like the way you look,” she said.
