iPhone users in EU can now set Google Maps as default navigation apps

Apple iPhone users in the European Union can now make Google Maps their default navigation app. This update, first spotted by Macerkopf, allows iPhones in the EU to open addresses from the web using Google Maps instead of Apple Maps. The rollout follows a similar change from WhatsApp, which now lets users set it as the default app for calls and texts on iPhones. “Google Maps received an update today that allows you to make the app your default navigation app on your iPhone,” reported the German site.
While Apple has allowed users to change default apps for things like email, web browsing, and messaging, the ability to pick a different navigation app is limited to EU users with iOS 18.4. This update is expected to be released in the coming days.
To check or change your default apps, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps on your iPhone. If you want to use Google Maps as your main navigation app, make sure you have the latest version installed from the App Store.
Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly going to avert a potential financial penalty and a directive from the European Union (EU) regarding its browser options on iPhones, following the company’s implementation of changes designed to align with the EU’s groundbreaking Digital Markets Act (DMA), a report has said.
Citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation, news agency Reuters reported that the European Commission, which initiated an investigation in March of the previous year under the DMA framework, is anticipated to conclude its inquiry early next week.
