The Delhi police have dismantled an international syndicate involved in smuggling stolen mobile phones to Bangladesh, an officer said on Sunday.
Abdush,24, a native of West Bengal who worked as a courier, was arrested while attempting to flee with 48 high-end stolen mobile phones worth approximately ₹20 lakh.
Police received information about an organised mobile theft gang targeting people at metro stations, buses, and crowded markets.
Smugglers purchased the stolen phones for ₹2,000 to 3,000 each and then smuggled them to West Bengal, where they were modified and resold in Bangladesh for ₹8,000-10,000 per unit, said Aditya Gautam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap near Salimgarh Bypass where they apprehended Abdush with stolen mobiles.
The DCP said Abdush disclosed that he had smuggled over 800 stolen phones in the past 18 months. “He was engaged in scrap trading but was lured into the illicit trade by accused Sameer and Salim. The Cyber Cell is now working to identify his associates and dismantle the wider network spanning Delhi, West Bengal, and Bangladesh,” added the DCP.
