Inside the top secret shipyard building Britain’s nuclear submarines

The door to the £130 million facility where the UK’s most advanced nuclear submarine is being constructed is quickly shut over spying fears.

There are concerns that satellites operated by the enemy could catch a glimpse of Dreadnought — first of the four Dreadnought-class submarines under construction in the shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.

Inside, work on the BN09 — the ninth ballistic nuclear submarine to be made for the Royal Navy — is well under way. By the early 2030s it will be the first of the new nuclear set to take over from the Vanguard class of submarines, which currently patrol the seas armed with Trident missiles capable of killing tens of thousands.
