Ministers have warned the Indian government that they can only make small changes to the UK’s visa system as they attempt to agree a trade deal.
Indian negotiators had suggested they were looking for a significant increase in the number of Indian professionals in sectors such as IT and healthcare who would be eligible for work visas.
Amid concerns about the impact that would have on net migration, British government sources told the website Politico that the Indian side had accepted only small changes to the UK’s visa regime that would result in no more than a hundred new visas each year.
