We could argue that the slip dress is the most versatile trend in summer dressing, offering endless ways to style the basic piece. But we’d also like to put forth the sheath dress, one of the dresses every woman should own, for contention. Really? The sheath dress? The form-fitting staple of MAGA women and news anchors everywhere? Yes, there are ways of styling a sheath without looking like you’re running for office, and expert Cynthia Kennedy, a San Diego-based personal stylist and image consultant, exclusively explains how.
Kennedy admits, “The sheath dress can easily veer into ‘political press conference’ [territory] if you’re not careful. The key is to break up the polish with something that feels more lived-in or unexpected.” How? For starters, consider color and prints. “Traditional black, navy, or pinstripes can lean corporate by default,” explains Kennedy. “But softer tones like camel, olive, rust, or even washed denim-blue feel way more relaxed. I also love sheath dresses in unexpected prints, like painterly florals, micro-checks, or abstract neutrals. Those little style details take the edge off the ‘buttoned-up’ vibe.” Check out the Everlane Selfie Tank Dress for that brief. “It comes in heather gray and bright cobalt that feel fresh, and it has stretch without clinging,” Kennedy says.
“Fabrics make a big difference, too,” she continues. “A cotton-linen blend or ponte knit will feel more wearable than, say, a stiff crepe or suiting material.” Kennedy recommends the Theory Sheath Dress in Good Wool, saying, “Not only is this dress stretchy and breathable, it’s great for our planet by being responsibly traced and sourced.”
Accessories will change the look of a sheath dress
As expert Cynthia Kennedy explains exclusively to Glam, a sheath dress with simple fashion accessories that make a statement will also prevent you from looking like you’re running for political office. “Don’t be afraid to treat a sheath like a base layer instead of the main event. Think of it like a blank canvas: Tie a sweater over your shoulders, throw on an oversized blazer, add a belt bag. That’s when the dress really starts working with you, not just sitting on your body,” she shares. For a great starting point, try the versatile Banana Republic Factory Racer-Neck Knit Dress, which Kennedy notes is “easier to dress down” because of the knit fabric.
Then there’s footwear. “Also, swap the pumps for something less formal, like a modern loafer, strappy sandal, or even sleek sneakers, depending on the fabric of the dress,” she says. Kennedy suggests pairing sneakers and gold hoops with the Ann Taylor Weekend Collection Button Denim Sheath Dress: “A little more casual, but perfect for a weekend take on the silhouette.”
Finally, extras. “A canvas tote instead of a structured bag, layered jewelry, or oversized sunglasses will pull the whole thing into real-life chic instead of ‘boardroom candidate,'” Kennedy explains. And don’t forget belts for avoiding the structured look: “… try sizing up and belting it. A looser fit plus intentional styling looks way more fashion-forward than something skin-tight with court shoes.”
