KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Shawnee Mission School District is considering following neighboring district and banning cell phones in classrooms.
Before it takes any action, it wants to hear from families with students in the district.
The district provided a link to an online survey. The survey is for families with children in the district to weigh in on the issue.
The survey comes after a parent started a petition supporting a ban.

According to the petition, more than 900 people have signed it since Oct. 1.
Parents with children in other Kansas school districts have voiced concerns about not being able to reach their children in an emergency, and other reasons students may need access to cell phones.
The people who created the petition address those concerns.
Olathe and Gardner-Edgerton School districts banned cell phones in classroom this year. In Missouri, the Lee’s Summit School District is also starting to talk about the possibility.
