How FISC builds a sustainable tomorrow for fashion

Ball State students browse a selection of clothes at the FISC pop-up shop from Oct. 23 to Oct. 25 at the Village Promenade Warehouse.

MUNCIE, Ind. – With the change of seasons, from summer to fall, means that the Fashion Industry Studies Club (FISC) is holding their yearly pop-up shop at the Village Promenade Warehouse, near the Little Snack Shop.

The club has one huge major focus for their sale and the club as a whole.

“Circular fashion is so important right now and that’s a big thing of FISC as a whole is just keeping them sustainable,” said Ivy Summerlot, FISC President.

Though to those of us who are outside the fashion world, what is circular fashion anyway? Summerlot has an answer for that.

“Circular fashion is instead of throwing clothing away and getting rid of it. We recycle it, resell it, and find it a new owner.”

FISC also has another focus that plays quite nicely along with circular fashion, which is sustainability.

“Sustainability is very important now as ever. With a lot of our clothing ending up in places like landfills, and just a lot of clothes being wasted, it’s very bad for the environment,” said Laci Dubbeld, Marketing Chair for FISC.

With this goal clearly established, the next step for FISC was to figure out how to get a large supply of clothes that are sustainable but also fashionable. “We do bins outside of and inside of the Applied Technology and Miller College of Business buildings. We collect clothes for a few months,” said Summerlot.

Finally, these donated clothes are now waiting to find a new closet to call home. Which they can ultimately achieve at the pop-up sale.
