Hot car warning & other safety tips for traveling with children, pets during spring, summer vacation

National Kids and Pets Day is an opportunity to celebrate the relationship we have with our children and their furry friends.

It is also a reminder of the dangers they face in cars, especially as families prepare to drive for spring or summer vacations.

“It’s our responsibility to protect those who rely on us,” said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins. “Never leave kids or pets in a hot car, even for a moment, and always ensure they are properly restrained during a drive. Simple precautions can prevent tragic outcomes and save lives.”

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) database, of the car seats inspected in 2023, 74% were not used properly or were incorrectly installed.

Also, 25% of children transition to booster seats too soon, and 94% move to a seat belt too soon.

“Car seats are a crucial layer of protection for growing bodies,” said Jenkins. “Ensuring your child is in the correct car seat for their age and size will help safeguard their life.”

Traveling with pets

Traveling with pets can be rewarding, but it’s important to plan ahead to ensure they’re safe and comfortable. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water and pack their favorite toys or blankets.

Frequent breaks for exercise and bathroom needs are crucial, especially on long trips.

Always ensure your pet is properly secured during a drive to stop distractions from happening and keep everyone safe in case of accidents or stops.

• Never let your dog sit in the front seat, especially if airbags are equipped.

• Crates are the safest option, especially for big dogs, as they can be secured in the back seat or cargo area.

• If you can’t use a crate, a pet harness and seatbelt can be used, but make sure they are properly designed and tested.

• The back seat or cargo area is actually the safest place for dogs because it’s far away from airbags and less distracting to drivers.

“When you’re planning a trip with kids and pets, a little preparation goes a long way,” Jenkins continued. “Making sure everyone is secure and comfortable keeps them safe and sets the tone for a smooth and enjoyable journey.”
